This page describes our course offerings and provides specific information regarding what you can expect at the various auditions. All incoming performing arts students must complete placement auditions; those who don't will be placed in beginning level courses. Make up auditions are scheduled upon request if time allows.

Placements
BAND
Contact Mr. Gomez for more information: mgomez@sjusd.org _______________________________________ CHOIR For all students participating in one or more choral ensembles. All incoming singers are expected to complete an individual placement audition, which will designate which ensemble the student will be placed in for the following school year. Any singer not completing an individual audition will automatically be placed in Choral Union. Students will be tested for the following: major and chromatic scales as well as major and minor triads, and the singing of a musical excerpt. Proper execution and technique are big factors in determining what level a student will be placed in. Multiple turns are usually a requirement to move on into the advanced classes. Awareness and use of rhythm are looked at very closely for both regular and folklorico dancers. Any student not completing an individual audition will automatically be placed in Beginning Dance. You may choose either one of the two audition sessions to attend. Please come in appropriate dance attire and shoes. Be prepared to complete the following in across the floor demonstrations: Jazz walks/runs; Chasses; Pas de bourrees; Turning pas de bourrees, Chaines, Pirouettes, Leaps, Battements; Pique turns. If you have further questions, please contact Mr. George. _______________________________________ ORCHESTRA All incoming students who wish to join ANY orchestra must fill out and submit the signup form. Students will be placed in the appropriate class based on their playing and reading skills as demonstrated at their audition. Students with no prior experience can sign up for Prelude (Beginning) Orchestra, which does not require an audition. MARIACHI All incoming students who wish to join Mariachi must fill out and submit the signup form. Students must be able to demonstrate proficient playing skills on one of the following instruments: violin, trumpet, guitar, vihuela, bass, or guitarron. They are also expected to understand how to read basic music notation. Any vocalists who wish to sing with Mariachi must ALSO be able to play an instrument. Contact Ms. Jan for more information: ajan@sjusd.org _______________________________________ THEATRE ARTS For students participating in all levels of theatre All students are expected to do the following: 1. Formal audition introduction (“ Hi, I’m ______ , I’ll be performing the role of __ from the play _____ by _____.”) 2. Perform a 1-2 minute monologue from a play; please consult your drama teacher for appropriate audition material if necessary. Should be age appropriate. A copy of the script is not needed at the audition. Please do not use props or chairs. 3. Resumes are accepted, but not necessary. Download the HOW TO AUDITION flyer. Group Auditions
BOXED-IN THEATRE COMPANY
In order to be invited to audition for Boxed-In Theatre Company, students must have completed an individual audition. Invitations will be given immediately following that audition. Skills to be assessed: improvisational ability; ensemble compatibility; knowledge of acting technique terminology (written test); demonstration of outstanding acting techniques such as character development, projection, diction, blocking, objectives, tactics, status and more.; cold reading of selected scene. Please wear comfortable and appropriate clothing that allows you to move and sit on the floor. If you have further questions please contact Mr. Manthe. _______________________________________ BELLISSIMA, CHAMBER CHORALE, ESTETICA: The callback for these ensembles is by invitation only, based on skills demonstrated in the individual audition. The callback will be comprised of the following: rehearsing with the current ensemble members, which will include sight-reading as well as singing of ensemble repertoire. If you have further questions, please contact Miss Katemopoulos. _______________________________________ LINCOLN CONVERTIBLES Please note that a significant time commitment is expected by all dancers who become part of the Lincoln Convertibles. More information will be available on the audition day. Please dress in appropriate dance attire and shoes. Students should be prepared to do the following: perform across the floor patterns; Learn and perform a dance combination, to be taught on the first day of auditions and performed at call-backs. All students are judged on technique, performance style and ability to perform with others. Callbacks will be watched and judged by a panel of judges, which will include department teachers and dance professionals. If you have further questions, please contact Mr. George. _______________________________________ XOCHITL CULTURAL (FOLKLORICO DANCE TROUPE) Please note that a significant time commitment is expected by all dancers who become part of Xochitl Cultural. More information will be available on the audition day. Please dress in appropriate dance attire and shoes. Students should be prepared to do the following: perform basic technique from the state of Jalisco; learn and perform a dance, to be taught on the first day of auditions. The skirt work for the women and the performance skills of both men and women will be closely examined. All students are judged on technique, performance style and ability to perform with others.
